Artificial Intelligence and Virtual Reality
Artificial Intelligence (AI) is software that has human-like abilities and Virtual Reality (VR) is a computer-generated simulation that recreates a 3D environment. AI and Virtual reality have been used by the general public for long periods. But how can businesses become familiar with its uses? In this blog, we’ll go through how they generally work and the pros and cons of AI and VR.
AI with the general public
AI can help with day-to-day life and in workspaces. It can be useful for answering questions, giving feedback, helping with ideas, or giving advice. AI is a useful tool with millions of automated responses that can be used to help. However, AI might not be of much help if it requires any human-like responses such as personal questions about someone, or if an individual is speaking to it in a language it has not mastered yet. AI should never automatically be trusted as it could turn out to be a scam and sell your information. With AI a lot of individuals' jobs are at risk. As stated in a 2022 article from the Pew Research Center People, people more exposed to AI earn more than ones who are less exposed to AI.
The average hourly earnings of a male working in the AI industry is $33, compared to $20 in the jobs least exposed to AI. Working in high-exposure jobs earned $39 per hour for men and $28 for women. Since there are differences in pay between those who have high exposure to medium or little exposure, we know that the reason behind the differences in pay is that AI is being used in the work field. Since AI has been trained to do many things people do, individuals know that they may get laid off from their jobs.
In a January 2024 CNN article, Chegg, an education technology company cut 4% of their workforce or about 80 employees. In late April, Dropbox, a file-storage service, had said they’d be cutting about 16% of their workforce or about 500 people. Just in 2022, 212,294 workers in the tech industry have been laid off. Major technology companies like Microsoft have announced plans that they’d be laying off 10,000 employees. Just after they had announced the layoff, the company confirmed that they were making a “multibillion-dollar” investment into OpenAI which is the company behind ChatGPT.
CEO of Facebook, Mark Zuckerberg announced plans to lay off 10,000 people after cutting 11,000 positions last November. He also hinted at plans for heavily investing in AI. Even software engineers in Silicon Valley who once seemed in demand are now appearing to be at risk of losing their jobs or losing out on salary gains to those with more AI expertise.
Popular types of AI are being used globally such as Google Gemini a collaborative chat tool that sources information from the web, Quillbolt an online writing assistant that paraphrases and restructures text, CapCut an AI platform that enables users to design images and videos, and character AI a chatbot that uses an informal or causal language allows users to find or create a fictional characters and even real people to interact with. AI may cause problems in the future but it's still in the works and will not always be perfect in the response that one may want but it’s always improving and being developed.
Virtual Reality and its uses
VR for the past decade or so has been popular with mostly gaming and entertainment. However, VR is not just about entertainment but many other topics such as education, social engagement, promoting movement, and health.VR is a wonderful creation made to help humans with tasks and to have fun with. It also is very inclusive, especially with individuals who have physical disabilities. VR does have its downsides, especially with costs, potential health risks, isolation, and possibly addiction. VR developers have added a lot of accessibility features to VR such as text-to-speech, CC (closed captions), and customizable user connections.
With customizable user connections, one may have any interaction with their product or service where it’s made to make specific decisions based on data about the user. It’s very helpful when running a business because it increases customer satisfaction and meets a customer’s expectations. It may also boost customer loyalty. Augmented Reality (AR) is the technique of displaying digital objects in the real world and helping an individual with daily things.
There are mainly two types of AR, marker-based and markerless Marker-based AR experiences that occur in response to a predetermined input into your smartphone or other device. Markerless AR however relies on data provided by geographic location, cameras, and sensors. One great thing Augmented Reality does is help people discover and navigate places in the real world with the help of the Live View feature on apps like Google Maps. VR is a very dependable tool if used appropriately, in human’s lives and will help more in the future.
AI and Virtual Reality in the future
Since AI and VRs are machines/computer generated they will never be perfect. However, they are good in the field helping with data and giving recommendations on websites. AI and Virtual Reality are going to improve in the future and become more popular than they are now. AI and Virtual Reality may be used more commonly around the world, in households, in the workplace, and for personal use. AI and Virtual Reality will always be very helpful even if it has some downsides just like humans.
