6 Things you can do to secure your Smart Devices.

In the era of surveillance, what can you do to maintain your privacy? Privacy is something that has changed a lot recently with the fact of surveillance footage being everywhere at school, in the library, or in the grocery store how do you maintain your privacy? This blog will give you 6 tips on securing your IoT devices or more commonly known as a Smart devices at home. To make sure your information is not being stolen and used against you.

  1. Create separate wifi only for your smart devices. Use different passwords to improve your security level.

  2. Every single internet-enabled device has something called a MAC address. Mac address is like a post office box so when that device hits the internet if other devices want to send a message. I sent it eventually to the MAC address and that's how its signal is received. With IoT devices having a MAC address when you connected to the network initially you'll be able to see what the MAC address is for that IoT device.

  3. What is Mac address filtering? When you connect your IoT device to the internet you can see its Mac address. So the only devices that can access that Network or devices that have certain Mac addresses and again this is a very simple thing that you probably should be doing anyway but especially when you have an IoT device at your home.

  4. Hide your wifi network- This is a router setting- Enable SSID Broadcast, Hide SSID, Visibility Status, Enable Hidden Wireless, or similar. Will depend on what type of router/modem you are using to use these settings.

  5. Have your IoT device checked regularly so it has updated firmware. Making sure it is updated is a key so your personal information can not be stolen.

  6. Make sure your mobile devices are secure- Most cell phones don’t even have a simple antivirus on them. Cell phones are walking liabilities having passwords and banking info.  Go on your app store and download Bitdefender, McAfee, etc so all devices that access your IoT device are secure.

Don’t use ring- I prefer SimpliSafe. Amazon’s business plan is to sell your information. Ring is part of Amazon and all the video stored on the cloud can be handed over without your permission. You as the consumer is not the end goal. There are video doorbells that will store your video on a traditional SDD, as a security system would. Simplisafe allows you to not have your surveillance saved on the cloud. Visit our store and shop Simplisafe and other Smart Devices today.
