Cloud Security with Verkada

I had the chance to learn about cloud physical security from Verkada at one of their Cloud PhySec events. This event was at the beautiful Institute of Art in Minneapolis. The food was great, and I learned a lot. At first, I was unsure how cloud technology could secure physical assets, given that it's not a physical system itself. But I soon came to understand. Here’s what Cloud Physical Security is and how it can help you and your business.

Verkada Cloud PhySec Event

The event, which was held in the Target Wing of the Minneapolis Institute of Art, began with everyone being welcomed by the staff and other attendees. There was a variety of delicious food available throughout the event, which featured several speakers. Paul Green led a thorough discussion on migrating to and utilizing Verkada's single-pane-of-glass cloud platform, showcasing its benefits and functionalities. There were also some panelists that shared their insights, including Joe Cybert, Robert Berkowitz, and Napoleon Genereux.

What is Cloud Physical Security

However the speakers explained it well. They said that cloud physical security is a big step forward. Using the cloud means you don't need to use physical space to manage and store security measures. It also lets you access data on mobile devices, which makes things more convenient and flexible.

In situations where staff rely on volunteers who change often, it can be hard to share information about people on blacklists or who might be dangerous. Cloud physical security also uses AI to identify people on blacklists, which improves security. If the AI detects someone dangerous or on a blacklist through camera surveillance, it can quickly send an alert to security teams to check. This information can be sent to the right people, or, if necessary, law enforcement agencies.

Benefits of Cloud Physical Security

  • With cloud technology, anyone who has permission can access and monitor the system remotely using any device.

  • Since your data is stored in the cloud, you don't need as many physical servers and storage devices. You also won't have to worry as much about maintaining hardware.

  • As your system changes, the cloud's physical security can be adjusted to fit your needs.

  • This means that the cloud can save you money on hardware and maintenance.

  • The cloud can have extra security built into it to keep your data safer. Using encryption and authentication, only those with the proper permission can access your data.

  • You and your team won't have to go to a physical location to access your data. You can access your data through the internet immediately.

Examples of How Cloud Physical Security can be used

Retail

A retailer with six locations faced repeated thefts by the same individual, targeting different stores. To address this, they implemented a cloud-based physical security system with AI-powered video analytics. When an individual is banned for theft, their image and data is uploaded to the cloud. AI then scans live camera feeds from all locations to detect the person in real time. When spotted, instant alerts are sent to staff and security teams, enabling rapid intervention.

Landmarks

For a popular historic landmark with open public access and no physical fencing, maintaining security while preserving the site's openness was a unique challenge. To address this issue, the site implemented a cloud physical security system. Using existing and newly installed cameras, the system continuously monitors activity throughout the site. If a known threat or blacklisted individual is identified, AI triggers real-time alerts to on-site security teams and, if necessary, law enforcement.

Schools

Keeping students safe is a top priority for schools, especially in open-access areas such as playgrounds and entrances. One district implemented a cloud physical security system to increase protection without creating a fortress-like environment. After entering the front desk the person’s ID will be scanned and entered into a database. From there checks public records to see if this person has any criminal records. If a match is detected, the AI requests verification and, once confirmed, immediately alerts school security and authorities.
